HELP!!
A REQUEST FOR HELP... Terrible to report but the carved stone horse-watering trough known locally as PERROTS SPOUT outside THORNCLIFFE was stolen some years ago. This carved-stone, engraved trough was beside the riverside entrance to THORNCLIFFE and the stream of fresh water that flows through the gardens of THORNCLIFFE fed it.
This horse-watering trough was a well known landmark in Monkstown - friends would meet there, passers-by would drink the spring water from the trough or, in quieter times, drivers would wash their cars with water from it. This useful and ornamental item was placed beside the gate as a love token by the builder of THORNCLIFFE, JOHN PERROTT to his wife ISABELLA SUSAN PERROT (nee Poole) as the carving declared. They were married in 1859 - a year after Thorncliffe was built and when JOHN was aged 45. Apart from its amorous outpourings, it was of course of benefit as a source of pure, cool water to passing horses - the common mode of transport of course in the mid 1860s).
The trough is of little financial value but is an important piece of the fabric of Monkstown's past.
So we are asking for your HELP. If you ever come across this stolen item PLEASE let us know - you can use our CONTACT FORM or drop in to THORNCLIFFE.
Also, if you have any PICTURES or MEASUREMENTS of the trough we would be delighted and grateful to hear from you.
UPDATE!: Thanks to Coleman O'Mahony, we have the exact wording on the water-trough - FANTASTIC! But, if anyone has a photo of the text, (even partially), we could get the type font used, size and spacing details. YOUR HELP WOULD BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED.
...AND ANOTHER REQUEST FOR HELP! Could we ask for some help tracing the history of past owners and tenants of Thorncliffe. If you are, or know of any of the past occupiers of Thorncliffe, or have a story or information on the house's history could you kindly share this information. It would be most gratefully received!
